In a live technical test for Hades 2, the developers at Supergiant Games confirmed that you don’t need to play Hades to enjoy Hades 2. This may sound like a small detail, but in reality it matters more than you think.
Supergiant confirmed you don’t need to play Hades before Hades 2
At the beginning of the Hades 2 technical test that streamed live on April 17, Creative Director Greg Kasavin confirmed that you don’t need to play Hades to enjoy Hades 2. Since Hades 2 features an entirely new protagonist and storyline, playing it won’t require any prior knowledge of Hades, or even Greek mythology.
If you’re a huge Hades fan, don’t take this the wrong way and think that you won’t see connections between the two games. Greg Kasavin continued to say that this is a direct sequel and Hades fans will still receive tons of references and connections. This means that both Hades fans and new players can enjoy Hades 2 when it launches in Early Access sometime this year.
As described by the creative director, this is the gist of the main story of Hades 2:
Melinoë here is in Erebus, which is a place where the souls of the dead await their eternal sentencing, but Kronos the Titan of Time has kind of shaken things up and she is after him for reasons we shall discover.

Throughout the technical test, the two developers showcased brand-new features, but also familiar characters with new character art. Hades fans will inevitably be more rewarded by knowing more than newer fans, but new players will still be able to play Hades 2 without any confusion.
The Hades 2 technical test was also confirmed to be released for players who will receive an invitation (after registering on the game’s Steam store page) within the next month, but at least more than a week away. For now, we don’t have an exact date for the release, but this means that it should be available to try out within the next few weeks. Hades 2 is certainly one of the most anticipated games of 2024.
