There’s something oddly incestuous about the fact that ‘Major Nelson’ branded avatar items are now for sale on Xbox Live. I have no major (oh ho) beef with the man himself, but here we have vanity items labelled with the online profile of the man Microsoft pays to advertise vanity items to us. It’s creating a rather strange ouroboros-like marketing loop in my brain.
So, if you really, really want to show your support for someone who’s job it is to sell you things (you don’t, trust me), then a ‘Major Nelson’ themed cap, jumper, t-shirt and, er, tweed suit are available to wear. You can’t buy a crude version of his face to wear, no matter how much that might please you. Sorry.
Where next for Microsoft’s avatar marketplace? Perhaps clothing with a mini version of your avatar on it that you can also dress.
