Richard Branson’s Virgin Media group has acquired World Gaming, a leading videogame tournament website. This news comes after the announcement that Virgin will be at the E3 conference in LA next week to unveil their plan for re-entering the videogame market. What Virgin hopes to do with World Gaming is yet to be announced, however Galaxy4Gamers’ (a competing website) CEO, Chris Doe, has said Virgin’s move into the niche online tournament space would be important for the sport.”Gaming for real cash is still a relatively new concept here in the U.S., especially online where cheating remains a big deterrent. Richard Branson’s entrance into the industry will provide professional video gamers some long overdue attention and establish more credibility and standards to the sport,” he said.Although Doe says competing with a company like Virgin who has “endless resources” can be daunting, he believes the Virgin brand will add some gravitas and pull the sport out of the niche market.”The industry needs a media magnet like Branson to help shape its future, I look forward to seeing what the Virgin team comes up with.”
We’ll be at E3 speaking to the Virgin guys, so we’ll make sure we’ll get as much information as we can for you…
