Will there be an Unturned 2? Explained

Unturned is seeing a large rise in players, peaking player numbers in 2023 a full 10 years after the game’s initial launch. And as with any successful online multiplayer game, players have wondered: will there be an Unturned 2?

The main appeal in Unturned involves joining up with players from around the world or close by via LAN. This gameplay style is reminiscent of games like DayZ and Rust, with players enjoying their PvEvP escapades. However, there seems to be some contention on Unturned’s supposedly planned sequel.

Will there be an Unturned 2 full release?

Back in October 2018, a select few were chosen to test the very first Unturned 2 build. This build featured a simple vehicle demo, most likely just trying to see how the game works when people can join and drive around. A few more of these exclusive tests were rolled out over the last few months of 2018, with the last codes given out in July 2019. Sadly, it seems that this was the last time new players got a chance to test Unturned 2.

After a few years of hearing nothing regarding the development of Unturned 2, head developer Nelson Sexton announced in May of 2022 that Unturned 2’s development would be placed on an indefinite pause. Thankfully, it seems that this setback isn’t the end for new Unturned content.

New content for Unturned

According to the post linked above from Sexton, they plan to implement a fair amount of game reworks such as better driving, inventory systems, and more into the current version of Unturned 3.0. Since the announcement, players have expressed their thoughts regarding the change in content for Unturned.

Overall, the news of an unexpected and unplanned pause of development is never good. That being said, there will be a decent amount of newly developed systems making their way to Unturned, so not everything is lost. But it seems like even with player numbers hitting all-time highs in 2023, many players are worried that there won’t be much of a game left when these updates are released. Hence, why many fans were excited for an entirely new game.
