AMD announced the highly anticipated update to their cutting-edge upscaling technology FidelityFx Super Resolution (FSR) on 29 Sep 2023. The new FSR 3 brings with it enhanced Fluid Motion Frames and new quality modes like “Native AA” enabling massive improvements to both quality and frames-per-second. Since this is basically a free performance upgrade, you may be wondering how long until you can turn it on in Starfield. Well, the short answer is: official support might not come for a long time, but there are other ways. Here’s all you need to know about when FSR 3 is expected to come to Starfield!
Is FSR 3 coming to Starfield?
Numerous upcoming games have plans to incorporate FSR 3 into their gameplay experience. Among these titles are highly anticipated releases such as Cyberpunk 2077, Crimson Desert, and Forspoken. Unfortunately, Starfield is not included in this first list. This is a surprising revelation given how closely AMD and Bethesda had partnered for Starfield’s release. Neither Bethesda nor AMD have announced plans to incorporate FSR 3 in Starfield now or in the future, but when they do, we will be sure to update this article with new info. At present. It seems there’s a long wait until Bethesda decides to implement FSR 3 support officially.
FSR 3 mod for Starfield
On its release, Starfield had come without DLSS 3 support out of the box. Thankfully, the modding scene is alive and well. Modder PureDark has successfully implemented a DLSS 3 Mod that runs successfully in Starfield and is available on his Patreon. Another modder LukeFZ has created a free alternative for upscaling with DLSS which you can get on Nexus mods. These are some signs that it doesn’t matter whether Bethesda decides to add FSR 3 or not, we can say with quite some conviction that someone else will. It’s only a matter of time before Starfield’s Nexus page will be updated with an FSR 3 mod.
How to add Frame Generation to Starfield
Fortunately, AMD hasn’t been that quick to forget about Starfield. Those of us with an RX 7000 series card can install a beta driver that will enable frame generation on select (for now) DirectX 11 and 12 games including Starfield. All you have to do is install the driver from AMD’s website. Once installed, open up Adrenalin Software by pressing ALT+R. On the Global graphics page, you’ll see a setting for “AMD Fluid Motion Frames” under Radeon super-resolution. Toggle the setting to on and you should now have frame generation enabled in Starfield. While it’s not quite as optimized as FSR 3, it’s the next best thing.
When an FSR 3 mod hopefully releases, we’ll be here with a review of whether it’s worth it or not. In the meantime, check out our other Starfield articles.
