What is the Haunting in MW2 and Warzone 2?

Zombie Royale is back!

Halloween is a busy time of year for the games industry, with many franchises preparing for spooky-themed events. Call of Duty is no different and is celebrating with the ‘Haunting,’ which goes live in mid-October. The Haunting is a big event and affects everything from Warzone to MW2. If you’re looking for the scoop on everything that’s going on, let me answer the question: What is the Haunting in MW2 and Warzone 2?

What is the Haunting in MW2 and Warzone 2?

The Haunting starts on October 17, 2023, bringing events, modes, and Halloween-themed maps to Call of Duty. These additions pair nicely with this season’s spooky Battle Pass. A lot is going on, so here’s what to keep an eye out for in each game mode:

Warzone

The Haunting: Zombie Royale

Zombie Royale is a returning game mode that turns the traditional Battle Royale mode into a massive game of Infection. Operators must defend themselves against the Zombie horde. If they fall, they arise from the dead as Zombies themselves to hunt the remaining survivors. If past Zombie Royales are anything to go by, this event slaps, and Zombies have superpowers to level the field against their gun-tooting opponents.

The Haunting: Vondead Lockdown

This mode plays similarly to the multiplayer mode, Hardpoint, but on a large scale. If you prefer your Battle Royale experience with a healthy sprinkle of objective play, this is the mode for you. Vondead Lockdown takes place on Vondel at night.

Operation Nightmare

Details about Operation Nightmare are scarce. What little we know is cryptically described on the official Call of Duty blog post, with much of the intel listed as [Redacted]. The mission statement mentions a “Mastery Weapon Blueprint.” I don’t know about you, but that’s all the incentive I need to take on the undead head-on.

The Haunting: Equipment and Items

Three limited-time items are confirmed to spawn in Warzone. These are Captured Souls, the Bloodseeker Grenade, and the Haunted Box. The ‘Trick or Treat: Jump Scares’ make a return from previous Halloween events. Every lootable container has a chance to trigger a Jump Scare, so beware unless you want to throw your controller across the room!

Warzone 2: DMZ

It seems DMZ is also getting some love for Halloween. According to the official blog post, “DMZ focuses on the nighttime hunts for preternatural entities across Al Mazrah.” We’ll have to wait and see what that means, but the post also eludes to other ‘Haunting’ events coming to DMZ.

Modern Warfare 2

Modern Warfare 2 also gets a dose of Halloween content with two map reskins and a haunting twist to multiple game modes.

Are there rewards in the Haunting Event?

Across Warzone and MW2, players will earn ‘Souls’ by defeating other players, which can be spent on themed items. There are also daily login rewards to collect across the event.
