What is Quantum Essence when you defeat a Starborn in Starfield?

If you think you understand Quantum Essences, you don't understand Quantum Essences.

To talk about anything with the word “quantum” is already an almost impossible idea to grasp. In the case of Starfield, Quantum Essence and its usefulness is not very clear initially — let’s be honest, not much is in this game. However, it does serve a purpose, and don’t worry, we won’t get to keep these essences in a box where they are either alive or dead, or even alive/dead or dead/alive. Told you this doesn’t make any sense, but thankfully, no cat was harmed during this exercise.

When discovering ancient temples during the Power from Beyond quests in Starfield, you will get to learn new powers as well as collect Quantum Essence. These will drop after finishing off the Starborn Guardians. They are tasked with protecting each of the temples to prevent any traveler from unlocking the power within. These are formidable enemies but are certainly beatable if you have strong weapons and the help of a strong companion.

Once you have defeated the Starborn Guardian, you will receive a message that reads, “You have gained 1 Quantum Essence.” My initial thought was that, once you unlock powers from beyond, then you get to use Quantum Essence to activate them. However, whenever you access the powers menu, you will see that each is active and ready to pick. So, what is the purpose of the Quantum Essence?

Well, it is pretty easy once you get to play the game a bit while using the powers. To be honest, I didn’t notice any difference since I focused on using rifles. Yes, I know. However, once I started using these powers after collecting many Quantum Essences, I did notice a difference. The more Quantum Essence you collect, the faster your power meter will regenerate, allowing you to use powers more often than before.

So, visiting temples unlocks new powers and upgrades depending on how often we use them? That’s what I call generous. Go ahead and visit as many temples as you can so you can unlock new powers. They will help you in any combat or even persuasion situation. And don’t be like me and actually use them often — they have saved me in many intricate battle situations.
