In A Highland Song, Beltane is something that gets brought up a lot. You’re reminded of it every time you wake up, and it’s the reason you’ve set off on your quest in the first place.
Below, I’ve answered all of your questions related to Beltane. It’s spoiler-free, so don’t worry, I won’t tell you what happens at the end of the game.
What is Beltane?
To answer this question, I’d need to practically spoil the ending for you, which I will not do.
Beltane is something that your Uncle H wants you to see, and he’s been waiting a long time for you to make the journey. Beltane is A Highland Song’s central mystery, as not even Moira knows what it is. Looks like you’ll have to discover that one out for yourself.
What happens if you’re late for Beltane?
Whatever Beltane is, the game does provide some time pressure for you to make it. Each passing day draws you closer and closer. This certainly made me worry that not reaching the Lighthouse on time would be a game over.
Don’t worry about that and simply enjoy the game. If you get to Beltane, and you’re not at the Lighthouse, you can carry on playing. You’ll just simply have missed whatever it is that Uncle Hamish was trying to show you. It may be disappointing to miss it, but in A Highland Song, you can make the trip as many times as you want. You may even be early next time.
You can be as late as you need to the Lighthouse, and soon the game will simply state that you’re several days late to Beltane upon waking up. For your first playthrough, don’t worry about rushing just to make it on time, you’ll get another chance.
How to get to Beltane on time
If you want to get to Beltane on time, then you don’t have much time to lose.
You’ll need to be very careful, as dying does cost you a day, which isn’t sustainable. But don’t worry too much, I died once and still reached the Lighthouse with two days to spare.
You don’t need the map fragments to get to the next set of hills or mountains. There will be scarcely a marker, but natural trails do exist. If I’d found a peak without a map fragment that highlights a path, I’d simply trace the camera along the surface to try and find a cairn.
These cairns typically serve as a marker for a way onward. However, not all levels will have a cairn. At this point, you’ll simply need to travel the surface and bump into a path. When I was lost without a map fragment, I simply kept walking in one direction till I found a natural path to move onwards.
With this strategy, and being careful, you should make it to Beltane on time.
