What happens when you die in A Highland Song?

You're playing by nature's rules, now.

In A Highland Song, exhaustion and death are thoughts that are constantly hanging over your head. Moira is well aware of this, too, and will often comment on it. But what happens when your health drops to zero?

Death in A Highland Song

In A Highland Song, the great bar of health on the left side of the screen is something that is always reacting to the weather, to your missteps, and, of course, to your falls. Every bump and scrape whittles away at Moria’s life. So the question on your mind would naturally float to the severity or punishment for it reaching zero.

Thankfully, A Highland Song is rather lenient with death. When your health reaches zero, two things may happen.

If you had at least a moderate amount of health before dying – by falling down a steep slope or by jumping off a cliff – you’ll respawn where you jumped off, with only a bit of health reduced for the fall. Nothing will happen.

If you had a critical amount of health before dying, then you’ll wake up at the last peak or shelter you rested at. Your health will be fully restored, and your maximum health will be increased if it had previously been decreased. You’ll also have rested until the next morning. So, can be a blessing, but is mostly not desirable if you want to reach Beltane on time.

How to prevent dying in A Highland Song

You’ll take damage in A Highland Song in several ways. If it’s thundering, then your health will slowly deplete now and then. This can bring your health down to a critical level, although it will never kill you. Stay out of the rain and make sure to rest up after a heavy downfall.

Aside from the weather, most of your injury will be sustained through being exhausted and through falls, slips, and missing the beat when sprinting.

The only way really to avoid this sort of damage is by being careful. Make sure to stop when Moira’s exhausted, and don’t climb up anything too steep or too big, as Moira will get exhausted before completing the climb. Take it slow, as you have plenty of time to make it before Beltane.

Also, don’t rest or sleep anywhere uncomfortable, as that will decrease your maximum health. Always make sure that you know where the nearest house is, so you can retreat there before night falls. If it’s too late, Moira will sleep in the open, which will cause your maximum health to plummet. So avoid sleeping rough if you can. Sleeping comfortably will raise your maximum health again.
