There are a lot of surprises and mysteries to uncover in LEGO Fortnite. One such delightful event is when you get visited by a rainbow firefly. What does it do, and why does it fly away?
Rainbow Fireflies in LEGO Fortnite
Rainbow Fireflies in LEGO Fortnite are always an awesome sight. They look beautiful, especially when they flutter during the night. These creatures are unlike the others in the game, as they can’t be harmed, and don’t spawn normally.
A Rainbow Firefly will sometimes fly near you and will loiter for a while. Any attempt to approach the thing will result in it flying away. This will disrupt the pretty sights, but if you follow for long enough, you’ll be rewarded.
During both day and night, these visitors serve to notify you and bring you to a nearby treasure. It will always pay off to follow a firefly, as their loot can transpire in three ways. So don’t be put off by how far away they take you – just grab some food and follow before they go!

The Loot of the Fireflies
The Rainbow Fireflies in LEGO Fortnite will lead you to treasure should you follow them, and the loot they take you to will come in one of three variations.
The most common treasure that I’ve been brought to is a chest. These are found naturally in the world and can be looted for all manner of items. You will often see rarer items in these chests, although their loot isn’t usually anything to write home about. When the Rainbow Fireflies approach the chest, they’ll swirl above it before diving right into it.
The second form of treasure that a Rainbow Firefly will bring you to is a Llama. That’s right, those piñata llamas are even in LEGO Fortnite, and they’re there to burst with awesome gifts. Unlike in other Fortnite titles, you shouldn’t destroy them to open them, as petting them does the trick. Once petted, they’ll burst all of their loot onto the ground for you to pick up.
The final way that the Rainbow Fireflies will lead you to treasure is by…becoming the treasure. That’s right, they’ll sometimes lead you to a patch of open ground before dive-bombing into the floor, exploding a bunch of loot for you to quickly pick up. I assume this is to keep the Rainbow Fireflies rewarding even if you’ve looted all the nearby chests.
