Wartales: How to Capture Animals

Wild hearts can be broken.

Wartales explores the brutal world that exists many years after the fall of the Edoran Empire. People are treating each other quite badly, and you are no exception as you work to thrive in such an unforgiving environment. As you battle for survival, you’ll want to recruit any allies to your cause, even the ones with four legs. Here is our guide on how to capture animals in Wartales.

How to capture animals in Wartales

Although you can purchase an animal outright, or pay to recruit some of the ones you find living in cages, a low-cost alternative is to capture them when you meet them in combat. As long as a creature doesn’t have a designated name and isn’t a Ghost pack animal, you can very likely capture it.

To capture an animal, bring rope and knock it out while it is engaged with an ally in combat. If you are short on rope, you can have the tinkerer craft some at camp in exchange for some of your Hemp resources. Merchants also sell it, and you can find it at locations such as the stables.

When you find yourself battling an animal you wish to capture, start by having a companion engage it. Your goal is to bring its life meter down to around 25% so that it is significantly weakened, but don’t kill the creature. As your first character works to weaken your foe, have a second character come up on its side. When properly positioned and not involved in active combat, this secondary character can mount a context-sensitive capture attempt while the animal is busy dealing with the primary character.

Your attempt to capture the animal may or may not succeed. A successful attempt removes the animal from combat. Otherwise, the animal remains active in combat, doing its thing. If you are having difficulty capturing animals while using the above technique, try teaching your party members skills that relate to your ability to control animals. Some characters will be more adept than others.
