Warhammer Europe: No Plans To Close More Servers

In response to last week’s news that Mythic has offered Warhammer Online players free character transfers from the Ostermark server, we contacted the company to find out if more server closures were on the horizon.

During March, Mythic announced the closure of around 60 WAR servers in total across Europe and the United States. Recent news of another free transfer becoming available has led to rumours of more closures but, according to a statement given to us by WAR’s European publisher, Europe can rest assured that the servers this side of the pond are safe for the time being.

“GOA, European publisher of WAR, has no plans to scale back the WAR servers. There is an ongoing optimisation process that deals with efficient distribution of players between the servers, which is designed to ensure all players get the best possible experience.”

The optimisation referred to is the shifting of players from very busy realms to quieter ones. Several aspects of WAR require that servers have a high population of players, public quests are a good example – they need many players to be in the same area working together to complete an objective. However, merging two low population servers also ensures that players still experience high quality gameplay.Despite all this, Ostermark is a US server, so the fate of that particular realm is still unknown.
