Campaign progression tips
As far as Oxyotl’s Vortex progression in Total War: Warhammer II – The Silence & The Fury goes, it’s kind of a strange process.
So, at the start, you’re up against a Khrag, a generic Norscan faction. Since this is the first Visions of the Old Ones challenge, you can tear apart the army arrayed against you. Then, you can teleport to the middle of this province to plan your next moves.
Remember that you can only teleport once per turn to your capital, a challenge location, or a Silent Sanctum hub with a Capstone of Tepok building. Oxyotl also won’t be able to fast travel if he’s part of a siege, sailing the waters, or while in a region owned by a hostile force (war). We’ll discuss more about these facets later.
Eventually, though, things get a little tricky. No, his campaign isn’t difficult at all, but it turns into a mess because the next Visions of the Old Ones take you all over the map.
The armies/settlements that become targets might be part of a resurgent Khrag faction, but they could also belong to other races. Usually, these are Chaos-aligned forces such as Norscans, Skaven, Warriors of Chaos, Beastmen, and, yes, even Morathi (Cult of Pleasure). As such, you’ll go to war with various leaders which can prove to be a distraction.
Worldwide diplomacy
Evidently, it’s possible for you to arrive in other corners of the globe due to the challenge markers. If you ended up on the southeastern portion of the map, you could meet up with Kroq-gar and the Last Defenders faction. You may buddy up with him to fight Clan Mors and the other Skaven, all while conquering the settlements nearby to create a new power base.
In some cases, you could be close to Lustria to link up with Lord Mazdamundi of Hexoatl. Meeting the other Lizardmen factions quickly is a treat — you can even use the teleportation methods to reach the spot where Lord Kroak can be spawned. Perhaps the only downside I’ve experienced is that I could never get them to confederate with Oxyotl.
A few headaches with Oxyotl
While Oxyotl’s mechanics are decent on paper (compared to most other legendary lords), these feel disjointed and disconnected from actual missions. Likewise, you might encounter a few issues, primarily the sheer tedium when you’re going through his campaign. For reference, the final battle gets unlocked after a string of Visions of the Old Ones completions: one (against Khrag at the start) -> three -> six -> eleven. These challenges pop up five turns after the board is cleared, which leads to more waiting. Suddenly, the final battle, once unlocked, tells you that you only have five turns to do it.
Then, there’s the other victory condition mentioned earlier (i.e., five hard mode Visions of the Old Ones). Even after I completed the final battle, and though I reached 80+ turns already, I’ve yet to actually encounter missions with this difficulty level. It’s very weird, and I’m not even sure if these are implemented properly. Still, I’ve been told that there will be fixes in due course.
