Total War Saga: Troy – Mythos — Starting your Mythic Expedition
You can start a Mythic Expedition once you reach turn 15 in your campaign. You don’t actually have to begin ASAP, but it helps to prepare. It’s even possible for your eventual antagonist to end up recruiting a monster before you do if you dawdle for too long.
If you click on the Mythic Expedition campaign, you’ll see the three monsters that are available. You could also compare their stats, abilities, and additional mechanics.
Note: Before reaching turn 15, it’s possible to encounter rogue armies that are independent of other factions. Defeating each army gives you a mythological creature in your recruitment pool (i.e., Spearmasters of Elysium, Lesser Griffins, and Hydra Priests).
When you’re ready, you’ll need to create an expeditionary force comprised of one generic hero and several units. Make sure you have the necessary resources at hand.
Note 1: You’re limited to a single unique monster in your faction per campaign. As such, the Mythic Expedition can be canceled at any time (i.e., you want to choose a different monster or you need your resources). However, you’ll have to begin the entire process from scratch. The only time you’ll be locked in is once you’ve defeated the monster that you’re hunting.
Note 2: The expeditionary force that you send out acts independently and can’t be controlled on the campaign map while a Mythic Expedition is underway.
Dilemmas and outcomes
Each Mythic Expedition in Total War Saga: Troy – Mythos acts like a quest chain with five dilemmas and multiple choices. These occur every two turns after a Mythic Expedition has begun.
Some of these options grant buffs, whereas others include a penalty. In some cases, you might even receive new units. Another important factor would be buffs or quest items that join your force. There are instances when a decision in Dilemma #4 won’t be available because you didn’t obtain something from Dilemma #2.
Technically, there’s no wrong way to approach the entire quest chain. However, certain paths do lead to better outcomes.
The boss battle
After the fifth and final dilemma, you can start the quest battle against the creature that you’re hunting. This can be tough especially if you’re unprepared. On the bright side, your expeditionary force should have its own buffs or extra units, too, depending on your choices. Likewise, your main army led by your faction leader will be able to join this fight.
The goal in this quest battle is to simply defeat the monster. The other units pose a distraction, so you can either eliminate them or rush the boss (which can be a little risky). If you win the fight, the unique monster will be part of your faction (preventing you from selecting a different one). You’ll then be able to use its capabilities, such as specific units, resources, post-battle options, buildings, battle skills, and more. Lastly, the army you sent out on a Mythic Expedition will rejoin you on the campaign map.
In any case, let’s talk about some tips regarding the best faction leaders to choose from in the next part of our Total War Saga: Troy – Mythos monster recruitment and Mythic Expeditions guide.
