A few months ago Hi-Rez Studios announced Tribes: Universe, their persistent world FPS based on the classic tribes franchise.
Today at PAX East in Boston, Hi-Rez announced Tribes: Ascend which will be released this year and will utilise the Unreal 3 Engine. The game is being touted as the successor to Tribes 2, which as far as I’m concerned, was nowhere near as good as the original Tribes which was a classic and one of the best team based FPS titles ever released.
“Before Halo, before Modern Warfare, and before Battlefield, there was Tribes.”, says Todd Harris, Hi-Rez Studios COO. “Tribes fans appreciate the game’s essence – athletic FPS combat combined with teamwork and strategy. As we began development of Tribes Universe, we focused first on capturing that essence – refining and modernizing iconic elements like jetpacks, skiing, and vehicles. We’ve had tremendous fun play-testing and realized the potential of a multiplayer focused title ahead of Tribes Universe. The community has been waiting for a multi-player shooter that is the modern successor to T2. Tribes: Ascend is that game.”

Tribes: Ascend will be available for digital download later this year for the PC and 360. Hi-Rez is also looking to bring the game to other platforms stating that this is “under consideration”.
We have high hopes for the return of the franchise following the work by Hi-Rez on their MMOFPS Global Agenda which we rather enjoyed.
