Torment: Tides of Numenera trailer grapples with the combat system

This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

inXile clearly aren’t resting on their laurels after winning our prestigious “Best Purple Fountain Made of Tiny Enigmatic Fish” award, as this new trailer for Torment: Tides of Numenera shows.

Truthfully, it’s less a trailer and more a really detailed primer on the options combat will offer you, without actually detailing the specifics of how battles work (which are quite unique, if memory serves). There’s discussion on your choice of weapons, the powerful single-use Cyphers, and the powers of your allies (including the excellent descriptions of “trans-dimensional alter-egos and living tattoos”). There’s talk about how, even in a fight, you can do things that make a difference: talk to people halfway through and intimidate them, or maybe pick off the leader so the stragglers run.

And hey – if you die, that’s not the end! You just wind up in the Castoff’s Labyrinth, a maze within your mind containing new sub-plots and various ways to increase your power. Which is quite a nice way to build on Planescape: Torment‘s “you can’t actually die unless you do something tragically stupid like piss off a god” feature, I reckon.

Anyway, you can have a look at the trailer below – although it’s making Torment: Tides of Numenera‘s release date of 28 February feel much further away to me.
