Torchlight returns with Torchlight Frontiers from Max Schaefer’s Echtra Games

Back in June, we reported that developer Echtra Games, which was founded by Runic Games’ founder Max Schaefer (also of Diablo fame), was working on a new project which was “based on a big world from a beloved franchise”. Today Perfect World and Echtra Games have announced the return of Torchlight with a new title called Torchlight Frontiers.

Echtra Games includes key players including Max Schaefer (Diablo 2), David Glenn (Diablo 2), and Justin Miller (Torchlight) so there’s plenty of experience behind what they are dubbing a shared-world action-RPG. This new game will bring some of the features and mechanics over from the classic Torchlight games but this time in a shared persistent and dynamically generated world. The game will continue the torchlight cartoony style and players will have to explore the game world while hacking and slashing through dungeons and enemies.

“Evolving the Torchlight universe into a shared world has always been a goal for the franchise, and I’m excited that we’re finally able to make it a reality,” said Max Schaefer. “Torchlight Frontiers will be a living, breathing universe that will still feel uniquely Torchlight, while we add our own creative spin to the game. The team is building something truly special, and we can’t wait for fans to play it for the first time at Gamescom and PAX West.”

Torchlight Frontiers is coming to PC, Xbox One, and PS4 probably in 2019.
