How to use a Seed in Minecraft

Seeds are a string of text that determines how your Minecraft world is generated. You can only enter them when creating a world, and how you do that will depend on the version of Minecraft you’re playing.

  • Select Advanced on the left side of the screen
  • Type the seed into the World seed box

Spawn Jumpscare

Spawn Jumpscare seed: -5029931165917724683
Version: Bedrock

This Minecraft seed quite literally jumpscares you from the moment you load into the world. The spawn point is on top of an Ocean Temple, which causes the Elder Guardian to suddenly pop up and apply mining fatigue.

There’s nothing particularly creepy about the rest of the seed, but being able to prank your friends with a jumpscare in a game like Minecraft is priceless. Credit to /u/Fragrant_Result_186 for finding this one, who accurately describes it as “the worst spawn ever.”

Deep Dark

Deep Dark seed: -6778246788154565662
Version: Bedrock

In vanilla Minecraft, there’s no biome more terrifying than the Deep Dark. The Warden turns Minecraft from a casual survival game into a bona fide horror movie, tracking you through vibrations as you carefully navigate the dim depths.

This official Mojang seed places you in barren grasslands next to an easily accessible cave system leading into the Deep Dark. If regular cave noises creep you out, you’re not ready for the twisted music and eerie sounds of the Warden’s domain.

Spooky Mansion

Spooky Mansion seed: 165605352
Version: Bedrock

Spooky Mansion is another seed template from Mojang that places players atop a colossal woodland mansion on the outskirts of a forest. Whether you’re looking for an awesome base in a spooky location for a Survival world or a Halloween backdrop for screenshots, this seed has everything you need.

Herobrine’s World

Herobrine seed: 478868574082066804
Version: Java

(Note: this seed is only accessible through Minecraft Java Edition running a1.0.16)

Herobrine is one of the most popular urban legends in gaming, terrifying countless youngsters (I know I was one of them) and even cementing itself as an official part of Minecraft’s brand. Thanks to the incredibly talented folks at MinecraftAtHome and Kminster, you can visit the first world Herobrine was “spotted” in back in 2010.

The first mention of Herobrine online was accompanied by a single (edited) screenshot of an eyeless Steve standing menacingly at the foot of a grassy hill. Through some incredible technical work, the MinecraftAtHome team discovered the precise seed for this screenshot’s world, along with its coordinates.

If you’re feeling brave enough to hunt for Herobrine, the exact coordinates the screenshot was taken in are X=5.16 Y=71 Z=-298.54. While Mojang and Notch himself have confirmed that Herobrine has never existed, if you see some bare trees and strange pyramids in your adventure, don’t blame me.

666

Seed: 666
Version: Bedrock & Java

The “666” seed starts out strong in Bedrock by spawning you underwater and attempting to drown you. While nothing else seems out of the ordinary, players have reported strange goings-on as time passes in both the Bedrock and Java versions of Minecraft, such as strangely generated biomes and random crosses.

Now, are these players telling fibs? Probably! I saw two sheep spawn on the same block, making it look like they had two heads but nothing more. The scare factor of this seed is absolutely psychological, but who knows, maybe those rumors are true?

Skull Beach

Skull Beach seed: 1014704264836810903
Version: Bedrock & Java

While exploring their Survival world, /u/Adrielsch_ on Reddit discovered a beach that looks eerily like a melting skull. To see this spooky skull for yourself, travel to or /teleport to coordinates 3540 63 -1090. Could this be a one-off coincidence, or could this seed be hiding other skeletal secrets?

Melting Skull Island

Melting Skull Island seed: 1040934860
Version: Bedrock & Java

What’s even better and spookier than a skull beach? A skull island! Discovered by /u/DPS3, this seed places you on top of a gigantic island with the appearance of a melting skull.

Entering the eye socket leads you into a lush cave environment, making it the perfect supervillain lair that even Skeletor would be jealous of. As a bonus, plenty of zombies and skeletons spawn on top of the island, which you can treat as your creepy henchmen.

Twisted Mansion

Twisted Mansion seed: 2365443519548731383
Version: Bedrock

There’s something inherently scary about a video game not working as intended, and this world’s seed fits the bill. Directly at the spawn, players can find a bizarrely generated Woodland Mansion located atop a frozen lake.

While the front of the mansion is fairly normal, minus the local polar bears wandering outside, the back of the mansion is anything but. Combining with the remnants of a village, players can find the odd villager and an Iron Golem living among the Illagers, as well as bizarre structures that shouldn’t be there.

Venturing inside the mansion is a whole other experience, with colliding blocks and rooms that make that don’t make a lick of sense. Credit to /u/YourLocalKnight for finding this bizarre seed.

Rapunzel’s Mansion

Rapunzel’s Mansion seed: 1914824789546162560
Version: Java

Over on Reddit, DamgodW_-_ discovered the world’s tallest Woodland Mansion, and it’s directly at spawn! This seed places you among the clouds, directly on top of the tallest Woodland Mansion ever found. Even peering over the corner is enough to make your stomach turn, and the only way down is to leap to the waters below. Hope you’re not scared of heights! …Or water.

Spider Village

Spider Village seed: -6196758314322879020
Version: Java

For the arachnophobes out there, this “Spider Village” discovered by Coat-Short is the stuff of pure nightmares. At coordinates 190 130 100, players can find what appears to be a peaceful village, only to find it overrun with spiders.

In a cavity behind a small home is an exposed spider spawner, constantly generating spiders that crawl throughout the town and through the hills in the dead of night. Any villager who peers outside their window is bound to see glowing red eyes staring back.
