Crystal Dynamics went on stage at the Microsoft press conference to show off some Tomb Raider footage.
The footage on offer was dark, gritty, and brutal. Emphasis on dark, as you’ll see from the screenshots below.
It opens with young Lara bound and hanging upside down, and forced to swing to free herself. Which, er, wasn’t necessarily a good idea, because she lands rather painfully on a shard of bone that impales itself in her leg, requiring her to yank it out via a button-mashing session.
From there, she proceeds through an abandoned-mine-slash-cave-complex. Her “survival instincts” ability is shown off, which “highlights pieces of the world needed to make her escape.”
She wanders the complex, taking torches, going through incredibly dark and claustrophobic areas, and fending off an attack who keeps shouting that he’s trying to save her. Which, er, doesn’t go too well for him when he grabs hold of her leg, she kicks him, and a cave-in crushes him.
The end section of the preview has Lara running and jumping her way through the collapsing complex, dodging falling rocks and doing some stick-waggling and button-mashing to scramble up rockfaces and the like. When she escapes, she ends up on a rather stunning hill, with a vista overlooking the ocean – an ocean containing a number of wrecked ships, one of which looks like the liner she was travelling on, while another looks like a much older galleon.
Is this going to be set in a Bermuda Triangle-like area, then? Your guess is as good as mine. I’m eager to see more.
