It’s a disappointing day for sure. GameInformer got the Thief devs on interview, and tried to ask them about the issues with the game. Unfortunately, the devs reply in such a way that doesn’t acknowledge the poor reception from fans and reviewers.
Just so we’re on the same page; Thief has received quite a few positive reviews, so not everyone thinks the game is broken. However, Metacritic definitely shows that is not the majority opinion, with scores of 67, 69, and 70 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions respectively. Complaints abound, from the game design, loading times, audio,m and replacing longtime voice actor Stephen Russell.
We’ll take a few quotes from the interview, addressing the larger complaints for you here:
We were all very big fans of Stephen Russell’s previous work on Thief – the originals would not have been what they were without him. However we did not make Thief 4; this was a new entry into the series…
Audio is super important in a game like Thief, and we wanted to provide strong ambiance and an immersive experience for the players…
We needed to have these loading zones in there in order to create the rich, immersive environment you see in the game…
Some would complain that GameInformer treated the devs with kid gloves when they should have been more upfront and aggressive, and I have to agree on that point. Expectations were high on this reboot, and for many fans, Eidos and Square Enix have failed to deliver.
