The Survivalists guide: Finding mud and sand
You’re going to need quite a bit of mud and sand if you want to craft new items in The Survivalists. Heck, mud isn’t only used for making windows and stone walls, but also to build the Forge, the source of many high-end craftables in the game.
To find these, you’ll first need to have a Crafting Bench. Open Blueprint Mode (“R”), place down the object, and make sure you’ve got 2x stone chunk, 3x timber, and 2x rope. Next, once your Crafting Bench is ready, complete a few of the recipes from the tool handle and flimsy axe branch. This will unlock the recipe for the flimsy shovel — 1x tool handle, 1x stone chunk, 2x rope.

You’re not going to use your shovel to bury opponents like circa-2002 Triple H. Instead, you’re going to use it to start digging on the ground. Different terrain types will yield different raw materials:
- Beach – sand
- Grassland, beach, or caves – mud
- Volcanic biomes – pebbles
Don’t forget to use your monkey companions too. You can click on the “train” command, dig for a couple of seconds, and then pass the shovel to the monkey. It’ll then start digging around the area for sand, mud, or other components. Just come back later to gather the materials.
Lastly, it’s possible that the Mysterious Stranger and treasure chests have a shovel waiting for you (either to buy or to loot). However, it’s still much better to learn the recipe so you can build several of these items.
The Survivalists is available via Steam. For more information, check out our guides and features hub.
