The Quarry character deaths guide – Non-playable characters and the Hacketts (“Family Matters” achievement)
Let’s talk about how non-playable characters can die in The Quarry, as well as how to obtain the “Family Matters” achievement (where all members of the Hackett family meet their end).
Kayley Hackett
Unavoidable: Kayley has an unavoidable death. While she’s in her werewolf form, she gets shot by Laura as she’s scampering near the pool area.
Constance Hackett
There are two opportunities to kill the matriarch of the Hackett family:
- Shotgun blast: Chapter 9 (Laura) – Once Laura gets captured by the Hacketts, there’s a moment where Constance tries to wrest the gun from her hands. If you keep mashing the button, Laura will blast Constance in the face.
- Werewolf murder spree: Chapter 9 (Ryan) – Laura and Ryan will fall down from the attic, along with Chris in his werewolf form. Chris will start killing his own family members. Ryan might need to stab Bobby with the knife beforehand to weaken him. Otherwise, Bobby will fend off Chris, allowing their mom and dad to escape.
Jedediah Hackett
Similar to Constance, Jedediah can be killed a couple of times:
- Neck snap: Chapter 9 (Laura) – Once Laura reaches the top floor where The Sun card is, Jedediah will barge in (along with Constance if she’s still alive). Laura can attack and successfully pass the QTEs to take him out.
Bobby Hackett
As far as I know, there’s only one way Bobby dies in the game:
- Werewolf murder spree: Chapter 9 (Ryan) – Laura and Ryan will fall down from the attic, along with Chris in his werewolf form. Chris will start killing his own family members. In Bobby’s case, you may need to stab him with the knife lodged in Ryan’s side in one of the earlier scenes. You’ll be notified that “Bobby was weakened” while defending himself against Chris.
Chris Hackett
Deputy Dewey meets his doom-y once during the campaign:
- Shotgun with silver shells: Chapter 9 (Ryan) – After werewolf Chris is done murdering his kin, he turns to Ryan. You’ll need to blast him with the shotgun or Ryan ends up dead. With Chris dead, his line of the curse is lifted, turning everyone he infected (and all their ilk) back to normal.
Caleb Hackett
Chris’ son can be killed in a couple of ways:
- Shotgun with silver shells: Chapter 10 (Kaitlyn) – This is only possible if Abigail managed to survive her ordeals and she picked up the silver shotgun shells at the end of the basement hall in Chapter 9.
- While Kaitlyn is trying to evade werewolf Caleb, she’ll reach the ground floor of the lodge. There’s a prompt to “Investigate” or “Run.”
- Choose to investigate and Abigail will hand the shells to Kaitlyn. Then, when Caleb is about to attack, blast him with your weapon to finish him off.
- Frozen to death: Chapter 10 (Kaitlyn) – This is only possible if Abigail investigated the cabin during Chapter 1, picking up the stuffed toy from the bag.
- At the start of Chapter 5, the group will hear Bobby searching for them in the lodge. Choose to “Hide” and pass the Don’t Breathe sequence. Abby will accidentally leave the stuffed toy in the kitchen.
- Let’s fast forward to Chapter 10 with Kaitlyn. At the point where you can “Investigate” or “Run” (i.e., when Abby plans on giving you the silver shotgun shells), choose to run away.
- Kaitlyn will end up in the kitchen. Pass the Don’t Breathe sequence and pick “Freezer” and “Decoy.” Succeed in the button mash QTE and Kaitlyn will trap Caleb in the freezer.
- After killing Silas at the finale, all those who were cursed with lycanthropy will revert back to their human forms, causing Caleb to freeze to death.
- Note: As of now, I’m not sure if it’s possible for Caleb to survive if you trapped him and if you never killed Silas (which means Caleb won’t revert back into human form). Then again, since the full moon is over, he’ll probably die anyway.
Silas Vorez
Silas, the White Wolf, is the son of Eliza (you’ll learn more about the events of the past if you found The Hierophant card). You’ll encounter him during the game’s finale:
- Shotgun with silver shells: Chapter 10 (Laura) – Aim and shoot at a weakened Silas. If you miss or don’t shoot, Silas will kill anyone who’s nearby.
Travis Hackett
Travis has several character death scenes in The Quarry:
- “Mutually Assured” achievement (Chapter 9: Ryan) – To get the “Mutually Assured” achievement in The Quarry, you’ll need to make sure that Laura and Travis end up killing each other.
- In all their interactions, have Laura remain hostile or antagonistic.
- Near the end of Chapter 7 when Laura is attempting to lure Travis into her cell, pass the initial QTE to grab his gun.
- Fail the next QTEs to accidentally shoot him. She’ll leave him there, bleeding, which makes Travis extremely hostile. You’ll see a notification saying that Travis promises to kill Laura.
- Fast forward to Chapter 9, making sure that Laura stays alive the entire time. Then, once Laura, Ryan, and Were-Chris fall down from the attic, Laura will turn into a werewolf. She’ll decapitate Travis, and Travis ends up stabbing her heart.
- Note: You might need to let Werewolf Chris kill Ryan so that Laura remains a werewolf when she gets stabbed. I’m not sure what would happen if Chris is killed beforehand (i.e., if Laura reverts back into human form when the curse is lifted).
- Decapitated by Werewolf Silas in the car (Chapter 10: Laura) – This is only possible if Laura managed to survive her ordeals (so far), and if she’s been kind enough to Travis during Chapter 7 (i.e., don’t shoot him and pick friendly/compliant responses). Chris will also need to get killed by Ryan to end Laura’s curse. Travis and Laura will then decide to work together (i.e., nets you the “Above the Law” achievement). Then, in Chapter 10, you’ll have a special scene where Travis, Laura, and Ryan drive down the road to look for Silas.
- When the werewolf leaps on the roof of the car, there will be a QTE. Success keeps Laura conscious, while failure causes her to smack her head.
- Two more choices then appear depending on what happened (i.e., “Take Wheel” or “Grab Gun” and “Take Cover” or “Grab Gun”).
- Regardless of what occurred, you must fail the next QTEs. This will allow Silas to smash the roof of the car and rip out Travis’ head.
- Decapitated by Werewolf Silas in the forest (Chapter 10: Laura) – Follow the steps outlined above, but make sure to pass the QTEs. The trio will run over Silas, and he’ll scurry away.
- After a short discussion, you’ll find the werewolf nursing his wounds in the ruins of the circus.
- While controlling Laura, simply raise Laura’s gun. You can either miss your shots or not shoot at all. Silas will awaken, killing everyone in his path (i.e., Travis, Laura, and Ryan).
- Shotgun blast (Chapter 10: Laura) – This also follows the above method. However, you don’t want to raise Laura’s gun. Travis will then attempt to pry the shotgun from Laura’s hands.
- If you pass the QTE, Travis will get pushed away. You have a chance to manually shoot him, and a few more seconds to kill Silas as well. If you don’t take your shot within the time limit, Werewolf Silas will just kill everyone.
- If you fail the QTE, Travis will get shot accidentally. Silas will also wake up and you know the rest.
All right, that does it for these character deaths scenes in The Quarry. In the next part of our guide, we’ll talk about how to finish off Laura, Abby, Jacob, Dylan, and co.
