The Elder Scrolls Online is still going strong. The game’s last expansion, High Isle brought a lot to the game. But it seems that there’s even more to come. In fact, at Xbox’s Developer_Direct, Zenimax Online Studios briefly showed off what’s coming to the game next. With plenty more being shown at The Elder Scrolls Online 2023 Global Reveal live stream. Necrom is the name of the next expansion of The Elder Scrolls Online, and it returns players to the land of Morrowind. For those who love the spookier side of this universe, there could be a lot to like.
Necrom will feature a new class and some reimagined locations, as well as the return of Daedric Prince Hermaeus Mora. Long-time fans of the series may even recognize the name of the next chapter. Necrom is actually a location in Morrowind, but one that we haven’t seen since The Elder Scrolls: Arena. Rich Lambert, creative director for The Elder Scrolls Online, says things “have changed a lot since then, and the overall fidelity of things wouldn’t work if we did it that way.” So it won’t look one to one with how Arena presented it, but classic fans should still see some resemblance.
Return to Morrowind in The Elder Scrolls Online – Necrom
Morrowind is one of the darker locations in The Elder Scrolls. And it seems that Necrom is going even further. The small glimpses that we see in the teaser show off a dark landscape with plenty of skulls, Cthulu-like tentacles, and tons of reanimated skeletons. But alongside Necrom, players will also get to explore Apocrypha. This is the realm of Hermaeus Mora, a key figure from Skyrim‘s Dragonborn DLC. Mora typically plays a unique role in The Elder Scrolls universe, so it’ll be interesting to see how the story unfolds.
The new class also seems to fit in pretty well with all of this. The Arcanist is the third new class that’s been introduced into The Elder Scrolls Online since its launch. Lambert describes the class as one that’s easy to pick up and play. It has offensive, defensive, and supportive abilities. Associate combat designer, Stephen Cerretani, also provides a fairly detailed breakdown of the class. And from what the developer has shown, it certainly looks to be versatile. All in all, it could be a cool inclusion to the game’s existing classes.
The Necrom chapter is coming to The Elder Scrolls Online on June 5. But it’s only a part of the overall ‘Shadow Over Morrowind’ storyline. Players can also check out the ‘Scribes of Fate’ update in March. This update essentially acts as a prologue to Necrom and includes two new dungeons to explore.
Lambert also teases that something else will come to The Elder Scrolls Online later in the year. He hints at what it could be by saying “an endless dungeon with a buddy,” which almost sounds like a sort of roguelike mode. With that, it’s clear that The Elder Scrolls Online has quite a busy year ahead.
