Studio MDHR’s charming yet challenging game Cuphead will soon receive a Netflix adaptation. Titled The Cuphead Show!, the series will feature the 1930s-styled hand-drawn animation and an upbeat jazz soundtrack like the game it’s based on.
The Cuphead Show! will follow Cuphead and his brother Mugman on many adventures across Inkwell Island. The show will incorporate characters from the game and expand on the world in which it is set. Hopefully, this means we’ll see Ms. Chalice join the brothers on a couple of their adventures! The show’s production is still in its starting phase, so story details and a release date have yet to be finalized.

Cuphead returns
The show will be helmed by King Features, and the animation will be handled by Netflix in-house, not Studio MDHR themselves. Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, founders of Studio MDHR, will serve as Executive Producers to oversee the project. For King Features, CJ Kettler will come on board as an Executive Producer. Dave Wasson, best known for his work on Mickey Mouse Shorts, and Cosmo Segurson (Camp Lazlo!, Chowder) will serve as Co-Executive Producers on Netflix’s side.
Speaking with IGN‘s Ryan McCaffrey, Jared Moldenhauer explains that The Cuphead Show! will be “safe for kids, but written so there are also things that adults find funny and appeals to a wider audience. It’s not a toddler show or a little kids cartoon. It’s safe to say that [the showrunners are] aiming for the same kind of vibe that the game hints at. They’ll be taking that idea and expanding it.”
Cuphead launched to high-praise for its beautiful, hand-drawn art style and demanding boss battles. It was predominately a boss rush game, where foes had multiple phases with different attach patterns, each more challenging than the last. So far, Cuphead has sold over 4 million units across PC and consoles, and it will soon make its way to more platforms, including some Tesla cars.
