Sonic Lost World
It’s sad that the ambitious Sega Saturn project Sonic X-Treme never got to see the light of day outside of being a limited prototype. But Sonic Lost World serves as a great predecessor, a 3D adventure where our hero speeds his way through a number of uniquely designed worlds that really engulf him.
This game was a cult favorite when it was released; and it’s well worth revisiting now, as it remains one of his sharper 3D adventures. In fact, this is probably as close to Super Mario Odyssey as Sonic gets — at least, until Sega makes a new 3D platformer for him to run around in.
And it’s available for a steal on Steam, going for less than $10. It’s well worth experimenting with, especially when you get to the donut world. Mmm, donuts.
Team Sonic Racing
Though we still prefer the free-for-all antics of Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed, its follow-up, Team Sonic Racing, isn’t bad in the least. This one’s based more around team-based tactics, as you select three characters from Sonic’s world and hit the open road for first place dominance.
Once again produced by Sumo Digital, Team Sonic has a lot of ambience to go around with its track design. It’s also a lot of fun to play once you embrace the team set-up; and it also has one of the best gaming soundtracks out there.
“Oh, but it’s too expensive!” you might be thinking. Guess again; the game is currently on sale for $9.99, making it a complete steal. Get it alongside Transformed and have yourself an exciting evening of racing.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Talk about a blast from the past. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continued to be one of the speedster’s most memorable adventures. And now, with this release, players can experience the game with a bit of an addendum — the inclusion of Knuckles the Echidna.
Serving up some retro-based fun without the need to plug in multiple cartridges, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles delivers hours of platforming fun, with lots of hidden secrets, two playable characters, classic ’90s visuals and a fun soundtrack. Not to mention the challenge level is definitely up there.
But the best part? The game won’t cost you an arm and a leg. In fact, you can get it right now on Steam for less than the price of a cup of coffee. A little bit of Sonic and Knuckles goes a long, long way.
