A ship reactor regulates the maximum class of modules you can equip on your ship. For example, you must have a Class B reactor to fit a Class B module like a weapon or gravitational drive. This means it is crucial to select a reactor that can balance the requirements of your intended modules with the power output it can generate. However, the game doesn’t tell you how to obtain a higher class reactor in the first place, so you can use higher class modules, leading to some frustrating moments when attempting to upgrade your ship. Here’s how to add modules that exceed reactor class in Starfield.
How to add modules that exceed reactor class in Starfield
It’s important to remember that Starfield categorizes its modules from class A (lowest) to class C (highest). If you try to use a module you don’t have the necessary pilot skill rank for, you’ll get an error message saying, “Ship contains modules that exceed reactor class.” To fix this issue, you must increase your Piloting skill level to Rank 3 (Class B) or 4 (Class C) to use higher class modules. For example, if you improve your Piloting skill to Rank 4, which lets you fly Class C ships, you can then use a Class C reactor, allowing you to use ship upgrades of classes A, B, and C.
To understand why this is the case, let’s look at how your Piloting skill rank affects which module classes you use. There are three classes of components: Class A, Class B, and Class C. Some parts do not have a class listing so that they can work with any of the three classes. As a default, you will be a Class A pilot, which means you can only build Class A ships to fly. It is important to note that you can’t add modules that exceed the reactor class. For instance, if you have a Class A reactor, you cannot use a Class B engine.
