In Starfield, ships are like cars here on Earth. Three hundred years into the future, they’re both a status symbol and a way to get around, but the distances traveled have changed considerably. Different models suit various purposes, so it’s worth knowing the difference (especially when their names can be so similar). To that end, here is our guide explaining all differences for the Keper R vs. the Kepler S in Starfield.
Kepler R vs. Kepler S differences explained in Starfield
As you play through the game’s main campaign, you’ll complete a number of early missions that introduce you to various members of Constellation. One of those quests, titled All That Money Can Buy, lets you get chummy with Walter Stroud, of Stroud-Eklund fame.

Once you clear that campaign mission and the brief Starborn mission that immediately follows, you can talk to Walter Stroud again to activate the optional Overdesigned mission, which ends with you receiving either the Kepler R or the Kepler S ship as one of your rewards.

The ship you receive depends on your performance in a design dispute. An ideal performance gets you the Kepler R vs. Kepler S you receive if your work isn’t quite optimal.
Kepler R ship
The Kepler R is a Class C ship that seems to have the best of everything Stroud-Eklund can provide. That’s by design, you might say. Here are the relevant specs:
- Value: 448,477
- Mass: 2,642
- Reactor: 24
- Crew: 6
- Jump: 30 LY
- Fuel: 2800
- Shield: 1288
- Hull: 999
- Cargo Capacity: 3905
Kepler S ship
The Kepler S is a Class B ship that addresses the design team’s concerns about going over budget. It’s still a very nice ship, but it lacks some of the features that its designers thought it could do without. Here are those specs:
- Value: 182,291
- Mass: 1,474
- Reactor: 18
- Crew: 3
- Jump: 30 LY
- Fuel: 400
- Shield: 912
- Hull: 689
- Cargo Capacity: 3520
Making your choice
Regarding the above stats for the Kepler R vs. the Kepler S, it’s likely your cargo capacity stats will differ slightly, since I had started upgrading the relevant Payload skill.

When you complete the Overdesigned mission, Walter Stroud immediately adds the ship you earned to your fleet. There’s no need to pay to register it. You can enjoy its benefits from fairly early in the game, depending when you tackle the mission. When it came down to a choice between the Kepler R vs. the Kepler S, I went with the Kepler R ship. To me, it seems the more useful vessel in every way, simply by virtue of its stats.
