Spiderman 2 Developer Insomniac Games Apologizes For an Error In-Game

Apology Delivered

Spiderman 2 has now swung its way into game-of-the-year conversations after its stellar release that shattered sales records for PlayStation.

But the beloved game developer just issued an apology over a small mistake that Insomniac Games overlooked before release.

Insomniac Games Apologizes For Spiderman 2 Flag Error

Cuban flags could be seen hanging within Miles’ home and throughout the game’s depiction of Harlem. The problem is that Miles is Puerto Rican. The flags hanging in both his home and on the streets are supposed to, instead, be the flag of Puerto Rico, not Cuba. While the flags are visually similar, they represent two different places with their own identities and cultures and therefore should be accurately represented.

It’s an oversight that was quickly noticed by some on X/Twitter, who brought the error to Insomaic’s attention over the weekend.

Some fans simply thought it was an honest mistake, while others felt it was a clear shot at how the Puerto Rican community has been reflected and represented in video games as of late. One user, in particular, JAAY_ROCK_ stated the following.

“Puerto Ricans are a prideful people that love their flag. Many of us love the representation in Miles Morales even made some Puerto Rican gamers emotional.

“So to see @insomniacgames lack of attention to detail concerning their Black/Puerto Rican character is disappointing.”

Now, this issue has been resolved as the October 26 update for Spiderman 2 has replaced the Cuban flags throughout the game with Puerto Rican flags.

Insomniac took to X/Twitter to apologize for this mistake, noting that they “understand that accurate representation matters, and greatly regret this error. We sincerely apologize and will do better in the future.”

While the error should have been caught before release, the fact that Insomniac has kept an open channel of communication with its audience and responded quickly to address the issue is reassuring.
