Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie trailer reveals Knuckles

Gotta go fast!

The Sonic the Hedgehog film being a decent adaption was probably one of the most shocking twists of 2020 in the film world. Video game adaptations have a reputation for being exclusively bad, after all. The signs weren’t looking good either, considering how ghastly the original Sonic design looked. But against all odds, Sonic persevered. A sequel for the hit movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, is now on the way, with a new trailer released last night during The Game Awards.

In the trailer, we see many familiar faces, such as Dr. Robotnik and James Marsden’s character whose name I definitely remember. But some of the more welcome faces we see in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is with Tails and Knuckles, who are voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey and Idris Elba, respectively. O’Shaughnessey’s inclusion is actually a welcome surprise, as she’s reprised her role from the video games. It’s always good to see beloved voice actors able to continue their legacy.

…and Knuckles

But the most epic line I’ve heard in 2021 comes from Elba’s Knuckles, with an amazing line from the trailer. As Sonic revs up, defending his power against Dr. Robotnik, Knuckles stops him dead in his tracks. “Do I look like I need your power?” Woah. Elba’s casting was already somewhat of a shock, as I never really imagined the legendary actor would lend his talents to a Sonic the Hedgehog film. But I’m here for it.

The film will also utilize the Chaos Emeralds as a key plot point, another factor where the movie is leaning a bit closer to the source material, with Dr. Robotnik plotting Knuckles against Sonic. (To be quite honest, my Sonic lore is not up to date, and I only remember Knuckles and Sonic working together in Sonic Heroes. So this is very sad to me.) While I’m still a little skeptical over this sequel, the first one’s quality gives me hope that this one will be another pleasant surprise.

Check out the trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie, with Tails and Knuckles galore. The film hits theaters on April 8, 2022.
