Think fast: the sequel to the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Man, that’s going to further mess up Wikipedia and internet searches. The film’s Twitter account announced the name earlier today, while reaffirming the release date of April 8, 2022. The message also include a short, animated clip showing an orange ‘2’ trailing off into two, white-tipped tails. I have no idea what it’s implying.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will see the return of the cast and crew. Ben Schwartz will once more reprise the role of the blue blur. Jeff Fowler will direct, while Pat Casey and Josh Miller are set as writers.
What’s currently unknown, however, is the story. But we do know it will involve Sonic’s plucky young sidekick, Tails, who made a brief cameo at the end of the first film. I mean, the proof is in the logo. Naturally, Jim Carrey may make an appearance as Dr. Robotnik. Honestly, I really hope he does. I had some early misgivings with Carrey in the role of everyone’s egg-obsessed super villain, but he nailed it.
Check out the animated clip below, which features a neat remix of Emerald Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The game. Not the movie (but maybe also in the movie?). See? It’s already confusing.
Groundbreaking. Thought provoking. Extremely obvious. Presenting the official title of the #SonicMovie sequel: Sonic the Hedgehog 2! Catch #SonicMovie2 in theatres in 2022. pic.twitter.com/SlVk7fakp3

More Sonic the Hedgehog zipping to ya
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is only one project coming our way in 2022. Netflix recently unveiled Sonic Prime, a new animated show that will be available on the service next year. It will be produced by Ben 10 creator Man of Action along with Wild Brain Studio. It has a solid backing with the two teams working together, so I imagine it will do well once it speeds onto TV.
However, it will do so without Sonic’s longtime voice actor. In late January, Roger Craig Smith, who voiced our blue boy for more than a decade, stepped down from the role. At the moment, it’s unknown who will fill Sonic’s red sneakers. In fact, the fate of all voice actors behind some Sonic productions seem to be in jeopardy. As reported by Destructoid, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, the voice of Tails in the games and the Sonic Boom show, won’t reprise her role in Sonic Prime. Nor will Cindy Robinson, the voice behind Amy Rose. On the other hand, Mike Pollock, the voice of Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman, if you’re wrong), is still in. Could this be the second Sonic voice purge? Wait, what about my boy, Knuckles? What’s happening to my boy?
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be in theaters on April 8, 2022.
