Sombra’s ability kit in Overwatch 2 completely reworked for Season 7

A new ability and some interesting changes.

There are many changes with the upcoming launch of Overwatch 2 Season 7, one of them being Sombra’s ability kit getting completely reworked. Blizzard implemented these changes to balance her kit, but how balanced is it really? There’s all new information on her new kit coming to Season 7 in a new Blizzard blog post.

If you can see from the image below, there are several new features in Sombra’s kit. Some players online have complained that she needs a nerf, while others have said she deserves some buffs. Personally, I think she’s pretty powerful, since she can go invisible, teleport, and destroy your team’s backline in an instant. But is this rework actually going to balance her?

In reality, after analyzing the new changes, they seem more like buffs. I’m not sure if I’m alone in thinking this, but this looks less like a balance if you originally thought she deserved nerfs. First off, she can now infect enemies with a Virus maneuver. This is a projectile that deals damage overtime, even more-so to hacked enemies.

Alongside this, her Stealth ability is now a Passive. Essentially, Sombra is constantly invisible and moves fast until she’s in combat. This is a very strange change, in my opinion, but let me first explain her final rework. Now whenever Sombra throws her Translocator, she instantly teleports to it. Additionally, once she teleports, her Stealth cooldown reduces. Blizzard stated this in the blogpost to explain the changes:

“Our goal is to allow Sombra to be more committed to the targets she engages with and have a more active feel to her kit, all the while maintaining her character identity and playstyle as the world’s greatest hacker.”

Honestly, I expected more of a nerf than a buff to her abilities. Her new Virus ability is good for players who wanted a better kit for her, but perhaps it’s too much. The Passive is an interesting change, since Sombra players must try not to get hit just to turn invisible. That may be a nerf, but I’m not sure how well it’ll work for their favor.

Lastly, the Translocator change may nerf her a little, but the fact that she can Stealth a lot faster after teleporting also seems like a buff. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how her abilities play out once Season 7 launches on October 10.
