Skills, proficiencies, and languages
The next screen shows you the skill and proficiencies that you can boost for your character. Values that are fairly low are kind of useless when your party needs to get checks for them, so you’ll want some peeps who can specialize in particular roles.
Take a look at the columns from top to bottom and you’ll notice that ability scores/attributes govern a particular skill (i.e., CHA handles Persuasion, Intimidation, and the like). Ideally, you’ll want to have the following in your party:
- Athletics (STR) – This determines the jumping distance of characters. You’ll need Athletics for exploration since it allows you to traverse the map, picking up loot on ledges, or pushing obstacles to create new paths.
- Stealth (DEX) – Stealth is very important since you want to be able to scout a room or a hallway without getting detected. This allows you to prepare and reposition accordingly before doing a surprise attack.
- Arcana (INT) – Having a Wizard already helps you here. Arcana is used since it aids in crafting weapons and armor with the Manacalon Rosary.
- Insight (WIS) – If you pass an Insight/WIS check during cutscenes, you can determine the success rates of dialogue choices.
- Deception/Intimidation/Persuasion (CHA) – Speaking of dialogue choices, these are the three options that are presented to you at particular points in the game. There aren’t a lot of these, and having an Oath of Tirmar Paladin will probably cover all your needs.
Since we’re talking about dialogues already, take a look at the bottom of the screen to see the languages. Some are already unlocked based on race, whereas others can still be selected here. Likewise, don’t forget proficiencies in certain utility items such as Smith’s Tools and Poisoner’s Kit (crafting) and Thieves’ Tools (opening locks).
Note:Â See if a skill option has a small icon. It means that these skills aren’t actually used in Solasta: Crown of the Magister‘s main campaign, meaning these skills are fairly useless. This also applies to certain languages since you won’t need to translate the speech of a specific race type during the main quest.
Anyway, go ahead and finalize your character’s identity (looks). That’s it, you’ve completed your first custom character in Solasta: Crown of the Magister. Don’t forget, we still have a couple of facets to discuss, namely leveling up and acquiring feats.
Solasta: Crown of the Magister is available via Steam. For more information, check out our guides and features hub.
