Backgrounds, origins, and character personalities

Choosing the background or origin of your character in Solasta: Crown of the Magister will affect certain skills, weapon/armor proficiencies, and languages.

For instance, if I choose a Rogue with a Sellsword background, that character will have proficiency in Athletics and Intimidation checks, medium armor, and an extra language. Meanwhile, the Spy background gives proficiency when it comes to Stealth and Deception checks, Nature and Poisoner’s Kit crafting, and two more languages.

Note: Ideally, you’ll want your party to have a Wizard due to the class’ amazing AoE spells and proficiency with the Manacalon Rosary and Arcana skill used in crafting primed items. If you don’t have one, then you can choose the Academic background for the Manacalon Rosary proficiency.

Perhaps another important aspect is that backgrounds will determine the sidequest that your character can undertake as you play. For example, the Philosopher background has an NPC asking you about the nature of good and evil. As for the Aristocrat background, you’ll have to deal with an inheritance and squabbling heirs.

Lastly, you’ll also notice the personality flags that can be selected. You can choose two main ones and two additional ones. These mostly determine the disposition of a particular character such as when having banter or when responding to queries. This isn’t a strict alignment system that’d make party members leave if you’d a bad guy (that doesn’t happen in Solasta: Crown of the Magister). It’s just additional fluff.

Anyway, it’s time to talk about the ability scores or attributes in the next section of our guide.
