Silent Hill Universe

Silent Hill film director suggests Konami is ‘relaunching’ the series

Get ready for a potential Silent Hill 'cinematic universe.'

The Silent Hill series has had its fair share of rumors over the last few weeks. But the latest hint at the series’ return comes from Christophe Gans, the director of Silent Hill‘s 2006 film adaptation. In an interview for JEUXACTU, Gans confirmed that he’s working on a new Silent Hill film. And it doesn’t stop there, as he also revealed that the film is part of a larger Silent Hill multimedia universe.

From what we’ve heard so far, this doesn’t actually seem to be too far-fetched. Back in May, NateTheHate2 shared that multiple Silent Hill projects could be in development. These new projects included a new mainline entry, as well as multiple side stories. It wouldn’t be too hard to imagine a film fitting somewhere into all this. And Christophe Gans’ interview potentially sheds some more light on Konami’s plans with the series.

Could Silent Hill be coming back?

The interview with Gans has been translated by Gamingsym and provides plenty of interesting information. Firstly, Gans states that the series will be “relaunched in terms of video games, and therefore the film will become part of a global policy.” He then goes on to say that Konami was inspired to revive the series due to Capcom’s success with the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes.

It’s not exactly clear how this Silent Hill universe could come together. But Gans has confirmed that he’s working with Konami and that “the film is rolling.” According to a different interview for JeuxVideo, Gans says the film is aiming for a 2023 release. When it comes to film adaptations, the first Silent Hill is regarded to be a fairly decent one. It’s a mashup of the first and third entries of the games and does a decent job at telling that story. Silent Hill: Revelation was the second film adaptation to be made, and the less said about that the better.

Silent Hill Universe

Ultimately, this may be the biggest sign that Silent Hill is coming back. The notion of a Silent Hill universe is admittedly strange, but it could work well. In the past, Silent Hill has leaned towards a more anthological form of storytelling. With that sort of framing, a series of separate stories connected together in the same universe could work well.

The rumors are starting to form a strange picture for the Silent Hill franchise and its multimedia universe. However, it’s exciting that we may see it return in some form soon. We’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out in the near future.
