The Madness of King Charles: The final boss
Inside the palace, you’ll see more scenes of carnage, such as tortured and murdered servants. Likewise, you’ll hear Charles talking to a “demon” of sorts.
Before you can enter his sanctum, you’ll need to acquire some keys:
- Second floor on the left side –Â Move the cabinet to enter the room. You’ll find the Altar Room Key on a table.
- First floor on the left side – A servant will burn himself to death. The room to the right can be opened using the Altar Room Key. It has the Key of Angels.
- First floor on the right side – The kitchen has the Key of Devils next to a corpse on the table.
Now that you have both the Key of Angels and Key of Devils, you can open the door to Charles the Fat’s chambers. Be ready for the final boss in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: The Siege of Paris.
Charles the Fat boss fight mechanics
Stun meter and high defense – Charles the Fat has a massive health pool, and you won’t be able to do a lot of damage to him with your regular weapons. Instead, what you’ll need to do is block his attacks to lower her stun meter.
Using fire – If you’ve been paying attention to the story, you’ll know that Charles the Fat is afraid of fire due to a torturous ritual that he was subjected to when he was young. You can use weapons that can ignite or abilities that can immolate.
Even better, you can push Charles into the flaming braziers. To do this, you have to completely deplete his stun meter (make sure you’re both standing close to a brazier). Once Charles is kneeling down, press “R” to do a special move. This will take out one-third of Charles’ HP bar.
Charles’ attacks – Charles’ attacks are easily telegraphed since he’s swinging a large mace. He’ll usually do a couple of swings, followed by a ground slam that deals AoE damage if Eivor is too close. Try to block the initial swings, then sidestep when the mace is about to hit the ground.
In later phases, Charles will start throwing rocks to either douse the fires in the braziers or hit Eivor. If the fires go out, just use a torch (“T”) to light them again.
Kill or spare Charles?
By now, you’ll have noticed that there’s a small room with a large metal gate. The gate itself can be closed or opened by interacting with the switch. This allows you to trap Charles inside.
The idea is to move inside the cell once Charles is at the last one-third of his HP bar. Then, fully deplete his stun meter to drop him on the ground. You should have enough time to interact with the lever to close the gate. Oh, and if you try to do this earlier in the encounter, he’ll just stand back up.
Alternatively, you can continue attacking and burning Charles until his HP is depleted. This will lead to his death and Richardis will mourn him. She’d even mock you for your savagery (which is kind of silly considering all the atrocities that her husband committed).
Your decision here will slightly affect the dialogue in the ending conversation. Let’s talk about that now in the next part of our Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: The Siege of Paris guide.
