The Rot in the Slums and Bishop Engelwin
You can start “The Rot in the Slums” quest after clearing Melun of hostile soldiers brought by Bishop Engelwin. If you go to the marked location, you’ll meet up with Sigfred who’ll tell you about your assassination target.
Head to the marked location, a tavern, where you’ll begin your investigation. You have two options here:
- Check the letter on the table where the two soldiers are drinking. You’ll learn about a scribe who has a passcode.
- Talk to the drunk who’ll tell you that his daughter was kidnapped by the bishop’s men.
In my case, I decided to go down the stairs in the tavern (which lead to a sewer). This area has a couple of soldiers and some rat swarms.
Note: You might see a doorway here. You won’t be able to open it since it’s part of another main quest.
Go to the other end of the sewers and you’ll emerge somewhere in the Flooded Slums. You’ll see roughly five soldiers and a captive prisoner (the daughter of the drunk).
After dispatching your foes, follow the girl and she’ll tell you about a key left behind by bandits. Return to the sewers to find it on a desk (you can hold “V” so that it’s highlighted on your screen too).
With the key, it’s time to head to Saint Genevieve Church’s northern gate (the chapel is in the southeastern section of Paris).
Climb the bell tower and a devotee will tell you about the Deliverance ritual. It’s taking place in the basement of the church, but you need to pick up the Bellatores Robe in the nearby chest if you wish to gain access.
Note: You can refer to our Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: The Siege of Paris new weapons and armors guide to learn more about the loot that you can acquire in the expansion. Some of the items that you’ll find, such as the Bellatores Robe, are actually close to where main quests take place.
With the Bellatores Robe equipped, go down the basement. The monk will let you inside.
There’s a mini-puzzle here where the blindfolded adherent gives you some clues. Just use your torch (“T”) to light the two braziers. She’ll open the gate for you.
Downstairs, you’ll see the ritual area where a devotee is kneeling before Bishop Engelwin. There are also several soldiers here. Since you’re still wearing the Bellatores Robe, they won’t bother you unless you get too close.
As such, wait for them to move further away from the pool of water. Then, jump down and go to the marked area.
This will trigger a cutscene. Bishop Engelwin will ask Eivor to disrobe so he can offer his “blessing.” Do as the creep asks. Then, once prompted, click on the option to go for a cinematic assassination. Eivor will stab Bishop Engelwin in the throat. You’ll receive his Bloodied Crest as well as a key to his chambers. If you go back the way you came, you’ll be able to open the locked room which has the Scythe of Revolt.
This concludes “The Rot in the Slums” quest. Past this point, you’ll look for Charles the Fat as part of the “Majesty in the Dark” quest which I won’t discuss here. Anyway, let’s go to the next part of our Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: The Siege of Paris Black Box Infiltration missions guide to talk about the “Sister of Sorrow” quest and the Little Mother.
