Should you Fast Travel in Starfield?

Are we there yet?

Outer space is quite enormous, and although you have a space ship, Fast Travel is always an option. In Bethesda’s Starfield, traversing from planet to planet, and sometimes city to city, can be done in various ways. Players online have been debating on which method is best for space travel. Starfield: Should you use Fast Travel?

The convenience of Fast Travel is always a plus, but so is the immersive experience of manual space travel. The answer to if you should Fast Travel in Starfield is a yes, for various reasons I’ll outline below.

First off, while Reddit posts like this one that tells players to not fast travel planet to planet can be valid, the reasons given don’t give any tangible benefits. You may think that hopping in the cockpit, getting the engine going, and blasting into space is a crucial part of Starfield, but it doesn’t have to be. Sure, it’s immersive to do it every time, but doing it once in awhile is perfectly fine.

Don’t use fast travel to teleport from planet to planet

Space is large. You should know this by now. And because of how large it is, manually flying between planets isn’t viable. Although Alanah Pearce spent seven hours flying to a planet in Starfield, the game clearly wasn’t prepared for the player to actually accomplish this. There were plenty of graphical issues that popped up once she arrived at the planet. And no one realistically wants to spend hours traveling between planets.

But what about when you’re grav jumping between star systems? You can do this without having to watch a cutscene through your ship, but it’s nice to watch it play out once in awhile. I wouldn’t consider this Fast Travel, since using the Grav Drive is technically different from teleporting to waypoints through Fast Travel.

Overall, I think you should manually travel occasionally to experience those unique cut scenes where you’re taking flight and landing. But I also think that you can’t avoid Fast Travel in Starfield, as it would take you way too long to manually fly everywhere. It’s nearly impossible to avoid Fast Travel in some aspects of this game.
