Shootmania Storm will be partially free-to-play

Nadeo’s foray into the world of the first-person multiplayer shooter, Shootmania Storm, will be partially free to play. Two modes in the game will be accessible to all for free, according to details released by publisher Ubisoft today. To ‘unlock’ the full game, you’ll need to pay the $20 USD cover price (or pre-order to get it for closer to $16 USD).

The two modes available for free will be ‘Elite’ and ‘Royal’.

In Elite, it’s a 3 vs 3 situation, but with rounds consisting of 3 vs 1 (where the three have rocket launchers and the one has a railgun). Royal, which I played during a beta session and thoroughly enjoyed, is a standard deathmatch free-for-all, with the added attraction of an ever-shrinking play area. If you survive the creeping electric barriers, you’re left to duke it out with the other remaining players on a tiny scrap of land.
