As a gamer dad with a young son who is obsessed with dinosaurs, any games that feature the prehistoric creatures catch my attention. Games like Jurassic World Evolution, LEGO Jurassic World, and Gigantosaurus: The Game are nearly always on rotation in our house. While Second Extinction, from developer Systemic Reaction, may feature the terrible lizards, it’s one I’m gonna need to keep away from my little boy. However, it looks like a ton of fun, so I may just pick it up for myself.
You play alongside a couple of other players tasked with an array of missions on a dinosaur-infested planet. You will need to eradicate numerous different species of the predators as you complete your tasks. Fortunately, you are equipped with a comprehensive arsenal to do this. If this sounds like your kind of thing, you’ll want to know that Second Extinction just launched into Early Access on Steam.
Armed to the teeth
To celebrate this preliminary release of the game, Systemic Reaction has also released a new trailer for Second Extinction. In this new video we get to see the different characters we’ll be able to play as. First off, we’re introduced to Rosy the Enforcer, who is packing an impressive looking minigun. Then there’s Jürgen the enforcer who wields a scout rifle. Amir is an operative who rocks a grenade launcher. Then there’s Ortega, a trooper who is armed with an assault rifle as well as a meaty shotgun.
We also get a glimpse of the roadmap for the game with an update planned for next month and what we can expect in the short term as well as further out. Anyway, you can check out the trailer for yourself below.
Second Extinction really does look like a blast if you can find some friends (or other cooperative gamers) to play with. It’s nice to see a first-person shooter not skimp on the number of dinosaur enemies — looking at you Turok. If Systemic Reaction can maintain a decent variety of missions, enemies, and locations as well as making the gunplay feel good and balanced, it could have a solid franchise in its hands.
Second Extinction is available on Steam Early Access now for $24.99 USD.
