SaGa Frontier Remastered: The basics of Fuse’s campaign
As mentioned in our SaGa Frontier Remastered impressions piece, Asellus happens to be my favorite character. As such, I finished her story first in this new version of the game. That allowed me to select the New Game+ mode and, for my next run, I chose Fuse. Little did I know what this would entail.
For reference, it seems that finishing a campaign as a non-Fuse character ensures that Fuse will investigate that person if you chose him on your next run. As such, completing the game as Asellus meant that Fuse’s first investigation was about her disappearance.
Likewise, there’s a waiting area in IRPO that informs you about a nifty mechanic. Going back to what I mentioned, it looks like Fuse will be able to undertake the final battle of each default character (provided that you’ve beaten the game with that character first). There’s also a sort of difficulty increase for the final boss, too. The more final bosses you defeat as Fuse, the tougher things will be once he finally goes up against his own nemesis.
Note: As of now, I haven’t tested a Fuse run after clearing two or more campaigns first (i.e., Asellus -> T260 -> Blue -> Fuse), or saving Fuse for last. I’m not certain if this will make Fuse’s story a lot lengthier, like one investigation after another, or if things are mostly one-offs.
Fuse investigates Asellus and the Mystics
Since I had only completed SaGa Frontier Remastered as Asellus prior to selecting Fuse, I’ll detail some of the things I noticed. Firstly, Fuse’s investigation will lead him to the Bio Research Laboratory in Shrike. Funnily enough, it looks like Cotton is one of his IRPO informants.
After rescuing Cotton, you can head to the basement. What follows is a tidbit involving Asellus that happens to be part of cut content: Fuse will rescue her from the experimentation chamber, followed by a confrontation with Nasheera. You can choose to fight the demented researcher (which makes her summon the Earth Dragon), or you can decline. If you pick the former, it’s going to be a tough fight assuming your characters weren’t leveled properly during your previous run. If you pick the latter, Nasheera will be captured. I don’t think there’s a way you can battle the Earth Dragon here again.
Whatever your decision might be, Asellus will leave. You’ll then see a cutscene where Zozma and Rei join your party. Fuse returns to IRPO, determined to finish the case. Silence and Ren will also join your party (yes, that Ren, Emelia’s fiancé).
If you talk to the IRPO receptionist, you’ll be told that you can go to Facinaturu for the final battle. This will actually lead you to the waiting area I mentioned above (with the NPC that tells you about the increasing difficulty for Fuse’s big boss).
What else can you do?
You have a lot of freedom when you play as Fuse in SaGa Frontier Remastered. For instance, even before you go to the Bio Research Lab, you can get the magic gifts, look for treasure, and recruit various peeps. Here are some examples:
- Scrap – Lute, T260, Riki, Mei-Ling, and Gen (if you start the arcane cards quest).
- Luminous – Rouge
- Koorong – Dr. Nusakan
- Owmi – Mesarthim (if Dr. Nusakan is with you)
- Yorkland – Thunder (if Lute is with you)
- I haven’t tried to get other characters like Time Lord, but it should be possible.
Anyway, the next section of our SaGa Frontier Remastered guide talks about what it’s like to attack Facinaturu as Fuse.
