It’d be easy to assume that Risk of Rain 2 is a departure. Visually, it looks different from 2013’s Risk of Rain. The first game presented players with a series of 2D levels full of vertical platforming and pitched battles. Risk of Rain 2 is heading down a different path.
Developer Hopoo Games changed camera perspectives for the upcoming sequel. It takes place on a 3D plane, featuring lo-fi visuals and a higher level of player control.
Though it looks different, the latest Risk of Rain 2 teaser shows that the game maintains the series’ hard-as-nails gameplay despite the shift to 3D.
In the teaser, Risk of Rain 2‘s combat takes center stage. It’s overwhelming. Groups of enemies assault Risk of Rain 2‘s playable characters from every angle. Players have unique skills and movement abilities to aid in staying out of danger, though. The dodge roll looks particularly useful, as it allows players to move in an out of combat without taking damage.
Similarly, it seems like there are plenty of different weapons and upgrades in the game. The trailer highlights recruitable drones, missile launchers, and jetpacks.
It’s fascinating to watch the new Risk of Rain 2 trailer and see how much it borrows from its predecessor’s formula. The games certainly look different from one another, but it’s clear that the frenetic combat and run-based gameplay remains. It might be a long way off from a release, but everything about Risk of Rain 2 seems to be shaping up quite nicely.
Risk of Rain 2 is still in development, but stay tuned for more updates.
