Reddit explains why they censored fans from reporting DayZ hack early

This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

As you may already know, Bohemia Interactive admitted to DayZ’s servers getting hyped, leading to their source code possibly being stolen. However, we could have found out earlier, if it wasn’t for Reddit’s moderators.

As Redditors angrily pointed out, they tried to start threads about the hack as early as five days ago, but the mods acted to delete those posts immediately. Moderator PurePassion tried to provide their own explanation, which we will share below:

Okay, here’s what’s up:
With a ongoing criminal investigation, it should be evident that it’s in everyone’s interest to keep the exposure minimal. It’s not about trying to cover anything up or establish a dictatorship on reddit but simply to not endanger it and trying to get the best out of it for both BIS and especially the community. We’re sorry for having to delete threads and comments on this subreddit but we believe it was for the communities best.

Additionally, this would usually fall under our rule number 3 as it is all hacking related content and thus would have to be removed anyways but because we believe that the community has to be informed about events such as this, we will leave this thread open.

Here is the official statement:

We have recently detected an attack on some of our servers, the precise nature and scope of this attack is currently being extensively investigated. There were no user data on any of the servers. Current development goals and schedules for our games will not be affected by this attack.
More information will follow as our investigation continues.
