A few weeks ago it was announced that Ryu from the Street Fighter series was joining the cast of Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid. He would be donning the Crimson Hawk Ranger costume from the mobile game Power Rangers: Legacy Wars. The announcement also revealed that Chun-Li, who has made an appearance in Legacy Wars, would join the 3v3 fighter with him. No gameplay was shown of her at the time, but today we finally have the Power Rangers Chun-Li trailer we’ve been waiting for.
The trailer starts off with Ryu tagging in Chun-Li, and right away we can see that she carries a lot over from her various incarnations in the Marvel vs. Capcom series. That isn’t surprising considering how much the game borrows from the venerable Versus series already. In this game Chun-Li is known as the Blue Phoenix ranger, matching the Phoenix power coin in her morpher.
Lots of animations are carried over from Street Fighter V as well, like her back throw and super combo. However, in this version her back throw causes a wall bounce, allowing for a follow up combo. Her Spinning Bird Kick has another kick at the end that causes a wall bounce as well. Senenshu (her handstand flip kick) and her downward air kick both cause a ground bounce on hit, and her slide can easily go under projectiles. Her EX Lightning Legs have incredibly fast startup and can interrupt other moves. We can also see that Senenshu paired with the right assists can make for some nasty left/right or even high/low mixups.
Just as technical as ever
Another note that fans of Marvel vs. Capcom will appreciate is that Chun-Li’s Yosokyaku (headstomp) acts as an off-the-ground attack. Not to mention she also retains her instant air lightning legs from Street Fighter V and various other Versus games. All of this together will likely make Chun-Li an absolute combo monster in the game. She appears to be just as technical as she’s always been. No doubt investing time in training mode can allow players to perform extremely flashy and powerful combos. Any stray hit from Chun-Li can turn into massive damage very quickly, especially with meter.
That isn’t uncommon in the game, every character has access to 100% touch of death combos. But Chun-Li seems to have a lot of versatility and options in how she can get there. Lastly, being the fashion icon that she is, Chun-Li also gets a radical ’90s-inspired costume just like Ryu did. At the end of this Power Rangers Chun-Li trailer, we can see that the Street Fighter DLC pack will release two weeks from today on May 25. Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid is available right now on Steam and has full cross-play with all gaming platforms.
