Portal RTX, that is, the world-famous puzzle game with new textures and ray tracing, was scheduled for a release date in November. Sadly, the launch has been apparently pushed forward just a bit — but not by too long. The game is coming out next week, and to prep everyone, Nvidia has shared the Portal RTX PC requirements for all to peruse.
And they just might scare you a bit. It’s well known by this point that ray tracing takes a major toll on a rig. For Portal RTX, Nvidia has revealed the PC requirements for minimum, recommended, and ultra settings. On the latter, the GPU manufacturer details what you’ll need for 4K 60 fps gaming with ray tracing — and it ain’t pretty. You’ll need at least an RTX 4080 GPU with DLSS 3 enabled, as well as an i7-12700K or Ryzen 9 5900 CPU plus 32 GB of memory. To experience Portal RTX at its best, Nvidia is recommending quite a beast of a PC.
Naturally, you’ll be free to tweak and test your settings. The minimum and recommended requirements are, however, not as comforting. For minimum settings at 1080p and 30 fps with a High graphics preset, you’re looking at an RTX 3060 with an i7-6700 or Ryzen 5 3600 CPU. On recommended at 1080p and 60 fps, that jumps up to an RTX 3080 GPU and an i7-9700K or Ryzen 5 3600 CPU. Both ask for 16 GB of RAM. It’s going to be a fight for that ray-traced cake. I’d like to see how much power is required for a 1440p aspect ratio, but we don’t have long to wait to find out.
Portal RTX release date is coming up soon
Portal RTX will launch next week on December 8. And here’s the cool thing: it’ll be completely free as DLC to the main game. Obviously, you will need to own Portal to get the RTX upgrade. However, the game is going for a low price of $9.99 USD now, so it won’t set you back too far.
The update does more than add ray tracing support. It includes new, high-resolution textures and improved models with higher polygon counts. Of course, the main reason to update the game will be the ray-traced lighting and shadows. You can check out how it looks in the video below.
