On the 28th anniversary of Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow, Nintendo gave us a glimpse at what’s next for the world of pocket monsters. What’s more, this new game will bring us back to the land of Kalos and reintroduce one of the best features in any Pokémon game: Mega Evolutions. So let’s speculate and take a look at 10 Pokémon that need Mega Evolutions in Pokémon ZA.
While we know the location of Pokémon ZA, specifics on new Mega Evolutions are still a mystery. Nintendo will most likely show off a lot of new content as we get closer to the 2025 launch, but until then we can have a bit of fun. The list is in no particular order, and shows 10 Pokémon we feel deserve that sweet Mega Evolution transformation in Pokémon ZA.
#1 – Flygon
Our first pick on the list is the Ground/Dragon-type, Flygon. A Pokémon that is largely overlooked in combat, but has still risen in popularity thanks to its design. Since Mega Evolutions alter the effective type of a Pokémon, having the Mega Flygon be the only Bug/Dragon-type in the game would make it a viable fighter.
#2 – Lapras
Coming up next is the Water/Ice-type Lapras. Lapras is the first Pokémon on the list to have a Mega Evolution-adjacent power in the form of a Gigantimax evolution. However, a Gigantimax evolution pales in comparison to the possibilities of a Mega Evolution. It would be amazing to see a solely Water-type Lapras with water shooting out of its shell.

#3 – Kalos Starters
For this pick, we chose to go with all three starters from Pokémon X/Y. More specifically, their final evolutions: Chesnaught, Delphox, and Geninja are our picks for new Mega Evolutions. In previous games, only one starter has been given a Mega Evolution, so it’s unclear if they’ll keep the status quo or look to break the mold. Either way, since all of the starter’s effective types form a triangle, Nintendo will look to keep that system unaffected.
#4 – Ninetales
The Fire-type Ninetales is our fourth pick on the list, and honestly, I’m shocked it didn’t get a Mega Evolution the first time around. It’s still unclear if we’ll see any Alolan variants of Pokémon like Ninetales, but I assume the base version would receive the evolution. They could even combine the variants, giving you a Ninetales with Fire and Ice with an appearance resembling yin and yang.
#5 – Dragonite
One Pokémon most deserving of a Mega Evolution has got to be the Dragon/Flying-type Dragonite. The very first Dragon-Type in the game, Dragonite is already a beast in battle. That being said, a Mega Evolution of Dragonite where it looked more dragon-y and dropping the flying type would skyrocket it to the top of any trainer’s party list.
#6 – Luxray
I think everyone who’s a fan of the Electric-type Luxray would love for a Mega Evolution. Not only would it look even cooler than it does now, but the possibility of a type change has been requested for a long time. And I know if they decided to make an Electric/Dark-type Mega Evolution, fans would rejoice.
#7 – Zygarde
Our only legendary on the list, and one you might not even know, is the Giratina of X/Y, Zygarde. This Dragon/Ground-type has gone through a few changes since its debut, and Pokémon ZA should call for yet another. I don’t think it needs a type change, but seeing a complete form of Zygarde that truly shows its enormous power and special effects and animations would be stellar.

#8 – Machamp
The Fighting-Type Pokémon Machamp is yet another case of a Mega Evolution being way overdue. Not for the fact that it might be a better fighter in battles, but more so because it could look insanely cool. Imagine seeing a Mega Evolution Machamp coming out Sukuna-style with six arms, ready for any occasion. This is my personal favorite for a Mega Evolution, at least besides our next entry on the list.
#9 – Eeveeloutions
Second to last on our list, we’ve got all the Eeveeloutions. As I stated above, this group of rapscallions is my personal pick for getting Mega Evolutions. And while I highly doubt that every single Eeveeloution will get a Mega Evolution, it would be nice to see some love given to Flareon and Glaceon. If they really felt like being spicy, they could have a normal Eevee Mega Evolution that gives you the power of all Eeveeloutions. Just a thought Nintendo.
#10 – Froslass
Finally, our last Pokémon on the list of the 10 Pokémon that need Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Legends ZA, is the Ice/Ghost-type Froslass. Froslass is an interesting option since Snorunt’s other evolution, Glalie, already has a Mega Evolution. Because of this, it would be interesting to see a Mega Evolution of Froslass with the same effective types. Furthermore, if Glalie’s Mega Evolution is anything to go off of, we could see a Froslass with a giant hood adorned with sharp icy crystals.
How Mega Evolutions work
Now that our personal picks for Mega Evolutions are out of the way, it’s time to figure out exactly what a Mega Evolution is. Mega Evolutions were introduced in Gen 6 with the release of Pokémon X/Y. In X/Y, you obtain a Mega Ring and Key Stone that allows you to perform a special evolution of certain Pokemon.
Mega Evolution not only changes the appearance of certain Pokémon, it also changes certain abilities, stats, and even effective types. However, for a Pokémon to Mega Evolve, they need to possess a Mega Stone.
Mega Stones are items that are specific to one species of a Pokémon, with a total of 48 out right now. We’ll be sure to see new Mega Evolutions announced before the release of Pokémon Legends ZA in 2025. Until then all we can do is take a glimpse at the potential returning Pokémon coming to Legends ZA.
