Bohemia Interactive has announced that DayZ will have a free weekend from 10:00 a.m. PT on February 13 to 10:00 a.m. PT on February 17. So, instead of spending Valentine’s Day weekend in a romantic cabin in the woods, you can spend it shooting undead in the woods. And the mountains, valleys, fields, and towns.
To play DayZ during the free weekend, all you need to do is head over to the game’s Steam page and install it. However, it looks like you’ll have to wait until the start of the event to do this. Right now, the only option is to purchase the game.
If you find yourself craving more of the DayZ survivor experience once the weekend is over, you can take advantage of the 40% discount Bohemia Interactive will offer on the base game. If you’ve seriously got the bug, you can also pick up the recently released Livonia DLC for 10% off.
Livonia brings a new map to the hardcore survival game, giving players 163 km² of extra terrain to explore. It’s smaller than the original DayZ map, so players will encounter each other a lot more regularly. For better or worse. As you explore this Eastern European-themed landscape, you’ll have to forage, fish, and hunt to keep from starving. Just beware of the Eurasian Brown Bear that roams the idyllic countryside.
Good when it’s free, but better with friends
DayZ recently picked up the ‘Better With Friends’ title in the Steam Awards. If this isn’t a sign that you should be trying out the game for free with a loved one this weekend, then I don’t know what is. And if your loved one isn’t into surviving in harsh environments, killing zombies, and occasionally murdering people, then grab a friend who is. It’s free, after all.
