Pillars of Eternity 2 embraces shipping in new video update

This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

The latest update to the Pillars of Eternity 2 crowdfunding efforts confirms what many had guessed; that the sequel will put you at the helm of your own ship. That, in turn, means more open exploration of the overworld map, and the potential to encounter all sorts of oddities on the high seas.

Your vessel is a Dyrwoodan sloop called The Defiant, which will function as your defacto home base during the game. When not in your party, recruited companions will hang out on board, and the captain’s quarters below decks will provide a spot to rest up. The Defiant can be customised and upgraded, with better cannons, hull, and so on. Or you can just change the colour of the sails if you fancy.

A stretch goal of $3.5 million USD (they’re currently at about $3.1 million with a couple of days to run) promises more customisation options, and if Obsidian somehow reach the $4 million point there will be additional ships to command.

Overworld map exploration is show a little bit in the accompanying video below, and means you’ll be able to explore and discover islands and dungeons in Pillars of Eternity 2 in a more freeform manner. During sea travel, you’ll be able to halt at any time to have access to your companions or manage the ship. Once discovered, you’ll be able to fast travel to locations.

See how that all works, along with a look at a oceanic encounter, below.
