Obsidian’s Project Eternity breaks Kickstarter funding record

Obsidian’s Project Eternity Kickstarter, launched to raise money for an isometric RPG styled after the Black Isle/Infinity Engine games of yore, has (at the time of writing) comfortably reached $3.6 million USD. This takes the title-in-waiting beyond the $3.3 million USD raised by Double Fine and makes it the highest funded videogame on Kickstarter to date.

It also means that the ‘stretch goal’ of $3.5 million USD was surpassed overnight, resulting in the promise of a second major city area for the game. In fact, here’s a handy break-down of all the features added as funding increased over the past few weeks:

  • 11 classes
  • 6 races
  • 8 companions
  • A huge mega dungeon of at least 10 levels (possibly 11 or 12 by the conclusion)
  • Player house
  • A stronghold
  • Two big cities

The campaign still has around six hours to run, and in around half an hour (12 noon Pacific Time), Obsidian will begin livestreaming the final moments through UStream and Twitch.tv

Project Eternity itself is scheduled for an April 2014 release and, thanks to the generosity of almost 70,000 backers, will not only be going ahead but will also be loaded with a fair few additional features.

Update: The final amount raised was 3.98 million USD.
