Square Enix have officially acknowledged that a third Tomb Raider title in the rebooted series exists, and will be coming out. Their twitter announcement is a bit unusual, and worth looking over a little closer.
Previous leaks have suggested that a third game from Crystal Dynamics is on the way, dubbed Shadow of the Tomb Raider (though that could be a working title). Today’s word from Square Enix basically confirms that, albeit not the name.
The message begins with a statement that Square have “big news to share next year”. They then say a new Tomb Raider is on the way, which suggests the big news is actually something related to that announcement, but not the announcement itself. Interestingly, they add that “it won’t be very long between the official reveal and when you can play.” That sounds a bit like the situation with Fallout 4, where it came out around five months after it was confirmed at E3.
Apparently the journey will begin with “a major event” in 2018. So, yes, this is all a bit cryptic. We’re getting a new Tomb Raider, that much is clear (and hopefully the PC version will come out at the same time as the console versions this time). The rest sounds like Square Enix embarking on a different approach to release schedules, or something.
