Judging by what’s shown here, the past champions of Earthrealm have risen from the dead and are now under the control of the villainous Shinnok. The only one on the side of the heroes is Kung Jin, the latest – and youngest – of the Shaolin warriors.

The plot relevance of the character is hardly the only thing in the trailer, though; those wanting some gore will also be fairly pleased, with a number of truly vicious X-Ray moves and Fatalities on offer. I mean, this is Mortal Kombat. You can hardly expect a two minute trailer without someone’s throat being ripped out and force-fed to them, can you?

Mortal Kombat X is due out on 14 April.
